Rice Coloring Fall colors

What you need:

  1. Bag of white rice
  2. Food coloring
  3. Zip lock bags
  4. Hand sanitizer
  5. Tray to dry

I placed the rice in a sensory tub for them to play with and feel. Older children may enjoy having a individual tray with a couple of utensils.

The steps were explained and then I let children experiment on their own. The instructions are so easy and there is no right or wrong. In a small zip lock bag add a handful of rice, add 3 to 7 drops of food coloring depending of how bright you want your rice. I only used Fall colors (red, orange, yellow), add the hand sanitizer.????? how much????? I usually offer a pump hand sanitizer so it is easy for the children to add the right amount. Close the zip lock bag with some air in it, let them shake it for about 20 seconds and transfer this rice onto the colored rice tray to dry.

The rice dried fast, in about 5 minutes. Hand sanitizer is used so the rice absorbs the color evenly and the alcohol in it helps dry the rice faster.

I have done this activity with children ages 2 to 14 years and it never gets old!

Now use this for sensory, fall crafts, on wood… Enjoy!
